MIA intervenes in ongoing crisis at MNG Gold in Bong County, calls on citizens to seek the law

Bong County, November 6, 2018:Liberia's Minister of Internal Affairs, Honorable Varney A. Sirleaf is currently in Kokoyah District, Bong County to intervene in the ongoing crisis between mining company MNG Gold and citizens.

According to reports, some citizens of the District allegedly vandalized the company's facilities and looted several valuables as a result of a motor accident involving the vehicle of a subcontractor in which four persons reportedly died. The vehicle belongs to a Chinese subcontractor company which was hired to blast rocks for MNG.

It started yesterday, Monday November 5, 2018 when the vehicle ran into a motorcycle which was transporting the deceased in the opposite direction.

A release from Internal Affairs Ministry says Minister Varney Sirleaf is currently in the area to put the situation under control.

Honorable Sirleaf is currently holding a mass meeting involving the citizens and management of MNG.
The Minister is accompanied to the area by Bong County Superintendent Honorable Esther Walker. Walker. Bong County Senator Henry Yallah and Representative Albert Hill are also on the mission.

The release said Minister Sirleaf firstly expressed regrets for lost of lives during the accident.

He has pledged Government's commitment to launch an investigation into situation.

Meanwhile, Honorable Sirleaf Sirleaf said, while Government will do everything to protect rights of citizens, he is warning citizens against taking the law into their own hands.

He promised that an investigation will also be conducted in order to bring to Justice those involved in the vandalism and alleged looting.
