Ministry of Internal Affairs: Resolution of Potential Border Conflict Between Liberia and Sierra Leone

Internal Affairs Minister leads resolution of potential border conflict between Liberia and Sierra Leone- Holds high-level meeting involving citizens of Liberia and Sierra Leone

The Ministry of Internal Affairs is pleased to announce the successful resolution of a potential border conflict between Liberia and Sierra Leone, which was centered in Lofa County. Internal Affairs Minister Francis Nyumalin led a high-level meeting aimed at addressing concerns raised by Sierra Leone regarding an alleged attempt by Liberia to encroach upon its territory.

During a press briefing in Lofa County, Minister Nyumalin explained that the situation arose from a misunderstanding stemming from erroneous speculation by a Liberian citizen. This speculation suggested that Liberia intended to shift the current land border to accommodate a bridge under construction, designed to enhance travel and trade between the two nations.

The misinformation triggered an early warning response from Sierra Leone, prompting them to alert the Liberian government through the Mano River Union Secretariat. In response to this situation, Minister Nyumalin emphasized Liberia’s commitment to peaceful coexistence, stating, “We have no history of border disputes with Sierra Leone,” and urged citizens to refrain from spreading false information that could escalate tensions.

The proactive approach taken by both governments culminated in a meeting between the ministers of internal affairs from Liberia and Sierra Leone, where the matter was amicably resolved. To further strengthen the relationship between the two countries and alleviate any fears regarding the bridge project, Minister Nyumalin announced that Liberia will provide the necessary materials for the construction of the bridge, while Sierra Leone will oversee the building process.

This collaborative effort is a testament to the shared commitment of both nations to promote regional stability and cooperation. The Ministry of Internal Affairs remains dedicated to fostering peaceful relations and open communication with our neighbors. We encourage all citizens to stay informed and engaged in promoting unity and understanding between Liberia and Sierra Leone.
