High-Level Interministerial Meeting on the Reaffirmation of Cities

In a significant step towards enhancing local governance and urban development, the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) convened a high-level interministerial meeting to discuss the reaffirmation of cities by the Local Government Act (LGA) of 2018. The meeting was held at the Bella Casa Hotel. Was presided over by Deputy Minister for Research and Development Planning, Edward K. Mulbah, who represented Minister F. Sakila Nyumalin Sr.

The primary objective of this meeting was to inform heads of various Ministries, Agencies, and Commissions (MACs) about the impending implementation of a crucial component of the LGA, specifically focusing on the criteria for chartering cities as outlined in Section 2.16d of the Act. This section mandates that the National Legislature ensures that minimum criteria for city establishment are met, paving the way for a comprehensive assessment process led by the MIA.

Deputy Minister for Operations, Hon. Selena P. Mappy, provided an overview of the Ministry’s role in this initiative, emphasizing the importance of collaboration among institutions. In her presentation, Hon. Ellen O. Pratt, Deputy Minister for Urban Affairs, further elaborated on the project, highlighting the data collection efforts that will be essential in evaluating infrastructure, facilities, and services across cities.

Deputy Minister Mulbah underscored the urgency of this initiative, noting that the deadline for reaffirming cities is set for December 2025, marking seven years since the passage of the LGA. He urged all MACs to prioritize this activity and actively participate in the data collection process. To facilitate this, a technical committee has been established, and MACs are encouraged to nominate representatives to support the collaborative effort.

“This is a crucial step in our journey towards improving urban governance and ensuring our cities are equipped to meet the needs of their residents,” Deputy Minister Mulbah stated. “By forming this technical committee, we aim to enhance inter-ministerial collaboration, gather vital insights into the conditions of our cities, and ensure adherence to regulations.”

The meeting concluded with a call to action for all MACs to engage in this important initiative, which promises to foster accountability and drive sustainable urban development across the nation.
