Strengthening Local Development
The Assistant Minister for Technical Services at the Ministry of Internal Affairs, Orando Armah, along with UNDP Liberia Resident Representative, Aliou Dia, is actively engaging with communities across Lofa, Bong, and Nimba Counties through a series of site visits aimed at fostering collaboration and dialogue with Civil Society Organizations (CSOs). These efforts are focused on empowering local communities and promoting sustainable development initiatives.
During a recent visit to Voinjama, the delegation held meaningful discussions with local CSOs on critical issues affecting the community, including the empowerment of women, youth, and People with Disabilities. The conversations addressed pressing topics such as Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV), legal aid support, and the establishment of safe homes. Additionally, the dialogue emphasized the importance of capacity development in key sectors such as health, agriculture, education, and tourism.
The CSO leaders in Voinjama expressed a strong desire for increased support from the UNDP to equip them with the necessary tools and resources for effective monitoring and engagement with local government initiatives. This collaboration is particularly vital as they work towards implementing the County Development Agenda (CDA), highlighting the significance of community involvement in governance and development processes.
The delegation also visited the Tenth Judicial Circuit Court in Voinjama and the Liberia National Police facilities in Zorzor, reinforcing their commitment to strengthening legal and security frameworks in the region.
In Salayea, Lofa County, the team explored forest management initiatives supported by the Community Based Forest Management (CBFM) Project, a joint effort between UNDP Liberia and FAO Liberia, funded by the Embassy of Sweden in Monrovia. This project is instrumental in promoting forest governance and conservation by assisting communities in applying for community forest status from the Forestry Development Authority. Currently, the demarcation of over 8,000 hectares of land in Salayea is underway, aimed at enhancing biodiversity conservation while providing alternative livelihoods for forest-dependent communities. This initiative seeks to mitigate threats to forest ecosystems and promote sustainable community development.
The Ministry of Internal Affairs remains steadfast in its commitment to fostering partnerships and empowering communities across Liberia to achieve sustainable development goals. Engaging with CSOs and local stakeholders is a crucial step towards enhancing governance, promoting social justice, and ensuring that all citizens have a voice in shaping their futures. Together, we are working to build a more inclusive and sustainable Liberia.
