Government Announces first case of Covid-19 in Liberia; as MIA reduces staff

March 18, 2020: Government of Liberia has announced the first case of the Coronavirus Disease in Liberia.
The nationwide pronouncement was made by President George Manneh Weah on Monday, March 16, 2020.
 
In his address, the President called for reduction in staff at each Government Ministry, Agency and commission(MACs) to avoid crowded workplace.
 
In accordance to the Monday, March 16,2020 nationwide address by His Excellency Dr. George Manneh Weah, the Ministry of Internal Affairs has taken steps to safeguard its staff against the Corona Virus.
 
The Department of Administration has listed few staff representing all departments within the Ministry who will report to work. This exercise is intended to reduce congestion at the workplace.
 
The rest of the MIA staff are assured that they will receive their salaries 100% while they remain to be stay home.
 
Honorable Varney A. Sirleaf, Minister of Internal Affairs has also requested all County Superintendents to institute similar measures, noting that it is a directive of Presidential directive.
 
All County Superintendents are hereby requested to remain in the areas of assignment while providing leadership in all efforts aimed at combating the corona Virus, in collaboration with County Health teams, local and international organizations, amongst others.
 
Meanwhile, Minister Sirleaf is urging citizens and other residents to cooperate with protocols put in place by health and local government authorities. "With all involved in the fight, we will defeat this virus quickly and Liberia will be recognized as the first country to eradicate Corona Virus" Minister Sirleaf said.
 
The Internal Affairs Minister also spoke with state radio ELBC Wednesday.
